2021 – a year of exploration

Sometimes, tomorrow comes three days later. Shut up.

I know I said I’d post my 2021 goals “tomorrow”, but when you spend your days off watching k-dramas till 3 am and getting up at 1pm, there’s only so much that can get done.

But it was amazing. I really got my batteries recharged.

I’m ready for the new year and all the things I want to accomplish.

I’ve learned a lot about myself as a writer and about my craft (and what it needs to improve) last year, but the most important thing (that I didn’t include in my yearly wrap up) is that I somewhat lost the joy and enthusiasm for my writing. I did feel like I was just going through the motions, taking steps forward a goal I set up.

It wasn’t until I started learning Korean in November that I was able to juxtapose my emotions when learning a new language and what I was experiencing when writing/editing.

I realized that I’ve been at this for the past decade if not more, but somewhere along the line, I lost the child-like awe at the opportunity to tell a story. The enthusiasm of getting the words fall on the page to create a whole new world.

I realized I lost my why.

So, for 2021, a year that came after the global pandemic took over the world and we’ve all learned more about ourselves and what we need in life; I will be rediscovering why I love writing. And if I still love it the way I used to.

I will try to find my why (because apparently my reasons so far were not significant enough), to see how it impacts my writing life going forward.

I will work on only one story this year, with no expectations of finishing it, should I realize I no longer want to pursue writing as anything other than a hobby.

I don’t know what’s waiting for me at the end of this exploration. In fact, I will try my best not to have any kind of expectations about this year. I want to be satisfied with whatever the outcome might be and whatever conclusions I arrive at. So, keep your fingers crossed for me. Let’s see where this year takes us.

2020 will be the Year of Editing

This is it.

A new year. A new decade. Same old, writing self.

When I was going through all the possible projects for 2020, I came to the conclusion that I don’t want to start anything new.

I have 7 projects in various draft stages and I have ideas for 5 more books. More will probably come because I know myself.

But I can’t just keep turning in draft 0 after draft 0. I won’t get anywhere that way. So I decided to start the decade by committing myself to editing.

In 2020, I want to focus on editing 3 different projects I have.

I want to finish editing the novel I’ve been working on in Q4 of 2019, to get it to a stage where I can send it off to beta. Though I’m not sure if it’s going to be ready for it by end of Q1 (which is my self-imposed deadline).

I want to substantially edit the Blood Magic project that I queried to agents in 2018 and see if I can improve it and figure out what wasn’t working. Because it’s clear something wasn’t working.

And finally, I want to take a look at a draft on my zombie werewolves novella I did years ago to get it in shape. I’m not sure if I want to split it into short stories or beef it up into a novel. But it’s been gathering digital dust for years and I want to do something with it. If it’s only to share it with my newsletter subscribers, who have been super chill with me and my lack of communication skills.

While I tried to be realistic in what I can accomplish in a year, editing does not come easy to me. It’s a struggle and I know I will have to push myself a lot this year. But I’m motivated and excited to see how much I improved over the years. And I know I have.

Wish me luck! 🙂

And let me know here (or on Twitter) what’s your goal for 2020?
